5 Must-Haves to Help Your Baby Sleep Comfortably

5 Must-Haves to Help Your Baby Sleep Comfortably

Wow! Everyone seems to think they know better. Your mother-in-law blames your sleepless nights on the fact that your baby is too cold. Because when you pick up your baby after a night at her place, he apparently slept through the night! Yeah right, just a lucky break, you think to yourself. And we all have that one friend who buys all the latest and most expensive gadgets and is convinced your baby doesn’t sleep well because you didn’t buy the lamp that emits womb sounds and spreads that comforting scent. Yeah, right! Or your neighbor who means well but insists her kids always slept perfectly and that it’s probably because you spoil your baby too much and shouldn’t pick him up at night. Nice advice, but what do you really need to help your baby sleep well? Of course, the love of mom and/or dad, a room with a comfortable temperature, and a full tummy—but we also have 5 items that might just help your baby get a good night’s rest. Sleep sack to cocoon comfortablyFor nine months, your little one was safely inside your belly, used to feeling your body warmth and being close to you. Babies want to keep that feeling after birth, and since you can’t carry your baby around all day—you already have sore muscles and back pain—letting your baby sleep in a sleep sack is best. Warm, secure, and safe. Blankets — are those old-fashioned?You might think, what do I need a blanket for? Just thinking about a blanket might take you back to your grandma’s house, tucked under three wool blankets with a sheet that mysteriously disappears in the middle of the night. No thanks! But for babies, it’s different. With a blanket, you can tuck your little one in snugly—there’s that cozy feeling again—and it limits their movement while providing security. In short: a real must-have! Fitted sheets, the nicest basicYes, a fitted sheet doesn’t need much explanation—it keeps your baby’s mattress clean, is comfortable, and can be washed endlessly. Add it to your baby checklist right away! Blanket — but which one?Oh dear, if you search Google for baby blankets, you get countless hits within seconds. It’s easy to get overwhelmed. How do you choose the best blanket for your (soon-to-be) baby? Knitted blankets are great for winter babies and also perfect in early spring and late fall, especially if lined—they keep your baby nice and warm. Expecting a summer baby? Go for light muslin or stretchy jersey blankets. These have a lower TOG rating and are ideal for warmer seasons. One less worry! Mosquito netThis isn’t an absolute must, but it definitely deserves a place on this list. A mosquito net gives your baby that cozy feeling again. Plus, it instantly transforms your baby’s room from bare to snug! And with endless color options, I bet you’ll find your favorite.
5 Things Nobody Told You About Sleeping Babies

5 Things Nobody Told You About Sleeping Babies

Before becoming a mom, you probably had an idea in your head of how a baby sleeps — based on all those stories you’ve always heard. Things like: “The first few weeks can actually be a bit boring because your baby sleeps all day,” or “Put your baby in their own crib from day one, they’ll sleep best that way.” But once you become a mom, you quickly throw everything you’ve heard about sleeping babies out the window. Because these are the things nobody told you about sleeping babies! 1. There’s No Off Switch!Sounds a bit harsh, but let’s say it with a wink: babies don’t have an off button. Just when your little one finally falls asleep, and you’ve raced around the house cleaning up the worst mess, managed to brush your hair, and finally sent that message to your friends’ group chat, you collapse on the couch — only to hear your baby crying again. 2. Sleep Cycle… What’s That?Yes, lucky you — babies have a sleep cycle of around 45 minutes. That means your baby could be wide awake again before you know it (especially if you’re not quick enough to help them transition to the next sleep cycle). Translation: you’ve got time to watch one episode of your favorite show, take that desperately needed shower, or drink two cups of coffee to survive the sleep deprivation from the night before. 3. Koala TimeYour maternity nurse might insist: “Let your baby get used to sleeping in their own bed.” But the moment you lay your little one down in their carefully made crib, they start crying. There’s only one solution: cuddles, and lots of them — all day (and night) long. Luckily, you’ve been looking forward to those snuggles for nine months, and you’ll enjoy every second of it. 4. Arms Up… and Startling Time!Every new mom knows this moment: your baby is peacefully snoozing when suddenly their arms shoot straight up into the air and slowly fall back down. Within a second, you’re standing next to the crib checking if everything’s okay. But no worries — this is just your baby’s startle reflex kicking in during a little dream. Time to go back to folding that endless pile of laundry. 5. Routine? Oh No, My Baby Doesn’t Have a Routine! You’ve signed your baby up for daycare, and during your first introductory visit, the staff asks you what your three-month-old’s routine is. You rack your brain — should my baby have a routine? To avoid total embarrassment, you just make something up. Here’s the good news: most babies at that age don’t have a real sleep routine, and most moms are just grateful if their baby sleeps at all!

The Road to Becoming a Certified Baby and Child Sleep Coach

The Road to Becoming a Certified Baby and Child Sleep Coach

My name is Amber (26), married to João (29), and together we have a daughter, Lucy (14 months). Recently, I became certified as a Baby and Child Sleep Coach. In this blog, I want to share the journey that led me here. Sleep became a more important topic in my life after becoming a mother. Getting enough sleep was no longer a given. Although I was prepared, I still had many questions about my daughter’s sleep. How many naps should she take? Should I wake her up? How long can she stay awake? When will her daytime rhythm improve? When will she sleep through the night? I scoured the internet for answers. Because of the many and often conflicting pieces of advice, I quickly lost overview. Based on my own experience as a mother, I decided to train as a Baby and Child Sleep Coach. I wanted to deepen my knowledge about sleep in babies and young children to help other parents with their questions and uncertainties. This also fit well with my background. I am trained as a family pedagogue and worked for three years as a family coach at the Center for Youth and Family. Helping families is something I’m passionate about and have always enjoyed. TrainingI completed the English-language Baby Sleep Consultant course. It’s an internationally recognized program that covers a lot of scientific knowledge about sleep. The course also takes a holistic view of sleep, discussing various factors that influence it, including nutrition. Throughout the training, I learned several sleep training methods. This was important to me, as I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Because of my broad training, I can find what suits the child and the parents best. I couldn’t wait to start practicing, so I began coaching 16 families. This is an essential part of the training because it teaches you how to personalize advice. That way, the advice fits not only the child and parent but also actually works. It’s so rewarding to see that my guidance helps children and their parents sleep better and more. A Typical WorkdayMy workdays currently consist of introductory conversations with parents interested in sleep support. Once parents book a service, they fill out an intake form and keep sleep diaries. Before the consultation, I analyze the intake and create tailored advice. During the consultation, I share this advice and answer questions. When parents book a program, I also create a detailed, personalized sleep plan. Afterward, we stay in close contact to monitor progress. Additionally, I share lots of information and tips about baby and toddler sleep on my Instagram. What most people don’t know is that my husband designs the layout of my Instagram posts. He also reminds me not to forget fathers. Although most contact is with mothers, fathers play a very important role in parenting and sleep too. I hope my posts help both mothers and fathers. If you want to check out my Instagram, you can find it here.
